This is devotional thought number 33 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15).

Adam and Eve, who were created with a perfect bond with God, surrendered that peace by listening to the lies of the devil. Eve fell into sin due to a loss of focus. She was deceived by Satan into believing she was missing something by doing God’s will. Adam jumped into sin due to a lack of trust that God could handle the problem his fallen wife had created for herself. He was self-deceived into thinking it was a good idea to join her in her folly. Now the floodgates of temptation and sin are open! If God doesn’t do something, all will be lost. As you are aware, since you are alive even though you inherited Adam’s propensity to sin and enjoy it, God enacted His miraculous plan of salvation to give us another chance at everlasting life. Jesus stepped in and took our place, giving His life so we could live.

There’s another aspect of the plan that we seldom discuss. It is, in a lot of ways, what makes this work so well. The aspect of which I speak is hostility. God promised the devil that He would put hostility (enmity) between him and human kind. Jesus would become the new progenitor representing humankind since Adam failed. Thus, those who had become quite cozy with sin, and had created a bond with evil, could have one last hope of breaking the bond; again, it’s called enmity. Enmity is an uncomfortability when we sin. It is the basis of feeling separated from God when we turn our backs on Him. This enmity is what sort of fuels good conscience under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. True indeed, many have chosen to seer our consciences and quell the entreaties of the Spirit, but it takes a lot of doing to break that enmity. When the enmity safeguard is broken due to our desire to hate love and disregard God’s calls to repentance, racism, hatred, malice, lust, greed, dishonesty, gossip, religious pomposity, etc., bear full sway in our lives.

I am thankful that God pulled back the curtain and let us see that He promised that we would become hostile toward Satan and his evil plots. I am doubly thankful that Jesus, the Seed of the woman crushes the head of Satan, while he is is only capable (or allowed) to nip at the heels of God’s people. Praise God for hostility against the devil, because the moment any of us become his friends, we really have a problem - an eternal one. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L.
