This is devotional thought number 34 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“Offer unto God thanksgiving; And pay thy vows unto the most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” (Psalm 50:14–15).
The most fastidious and particular among us have no shortage of religious rites, ordinances, ceremonies, precepts, disciplines, etc., but could it be that many of those who strive to be accurate with God, miss relationship with Him? Hear, what I am not saying here: I am not saying that God is slack and uninterested in the particulars of true and undefiled religion. I am saying, however, that God’s primary goal is for us to know, love, and be reconciled to Him. Inasmuch as our “devotion” is part and parcel to that outcome, we are blessed. The converse is also true.
In the first several verses of today’s theme chapter, God said that He had nothing bad to say in rebuke of His people’s “sacrifices.” They knew how to make offerings. Unfortunately, they added a ton of other requrements to the mix to show their “dedication.” I digress. He told them also that all of the animals they used for sacrifices were His. He owns them. He said that the hills upon which those animals grazed were His. He owns them too! He said if (clearly making a point) He were hungry, He would not ask them for a bite to eat. Why not? Everything is already His. He continues: “Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.”” (Psalm 50:14–15, NLT). All that we do in devotion to God should be from a thankful heart, and not obligation. God loves a cheerful giver. He loves when our hearts are transformed by Him and attuned to His voice. He loves when we call upon Him in times of peace and times of trouble. He loves to hear our voices when we are intent on listening to His.
God’s promise to those who are willing to show their devotion with thankfulness and submission to Him, is that when we call on Him in our troublous times, He will answer. He will deliver us. He will do so, to the point that His diliverance will show all who witness it, that He is a good God, who loves us and our children, to a thousand generations. The mounth of the Lord has spoken.—L.
