This is devotional thought number 35 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12–13).

We were born powerless. When I say this, I’m not only talking about our wobbly little heads, our inability to speak, or our need to be comforted when we cried. I am not only talking about our inability to walk, our need to be cared for in every particular, or to be burped after we drank our milk. I mean we were born powerless to be holy and remain as such until we choose to submit to the rebirth process.

I don’t need to write you a dissertation about how weak we are, or how difficult this life can be when we try to chart our own paths without God’s direct input. We lie, have malice, steal, cheat, lust, [or fill-in your pet sin here] without even thinking. It’s natural for us to do wrong. However, it is supernatural for us to do right. Since we have inherited weakness from Adam, God gave us the second Adam, Jesus Christ to be our new birth Father. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, which will empower us to become children of righteousness, destined for eternity with God.

God’s promise is that if we receive Jesus, He will make us children of God. I need to tell you that receiving Jesus is no mere verbal acquiescence. To receive Him is to accept His sacrifice for us to the point that we are transformed into His likeness. Those who receive Christ, are receptive to His will for our lives in every particular. Those who receive Him are submissive especially when His plans are contrary to ours. Those who receive Him follow Him wherever He leads. If this is you, God promises that you will be called His sons and daughters. You will become royalty; children of the heavenly King. This is God’s will for you. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L.
