Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Sabbath, March 12, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “Proverbs by Which to Live”
“Hatred stirreth up strifes: But love covereth all sins.” (Proverbs 10:12).
Have you ever wondered why so many people in our society are cantankerous? How about in our families, churches, or on the political scene? Some people seem to have a knack for stirring up strife and underscoring the wrongs of others. Could it be that those of us who do this have a false view of self, which spills over into our relationships with others? Could it be that pride overrules love and decency at times? Is there a remedy?
Love. It is a severely misunderstood principle. It was the highest order of love that our heavenly Father demonstrated when He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins. It was the highest order of love that actuated Jesus when He said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” as His enemies abused and crucified Him. It was supreme love that motivated God to give us the precious gifts of mercy, forgiveness, cleansing, and grace “while we were yet sinners.”
The remedy to deal with strife and discord among people is love. And having received God’s love in our hearts, we will realize that we are more alike than we are different. All of us are weak and prone to err. All of us need a helping hand at times. All of us make mistakes that require special grace from God to mend our brokenness. Therefore, love dismantles strife and is overflowing with forgiveness. When we love, we are not judgmental, backbiters, gossipers, and do not cherish a critical spirit of faultfinding. Rather, we seek to be at peace with others (inasmuch as it is possible), treat them as we would like to be treated, and seek to mend broken relationships when things go awry. This, by no means, means that we will always agree with everyone. We are individuals with reasoning ability and the powers of choice. However, when we do disagree, we will never use those disagreements as fuel to light fires of strife.
Allow love to overrule hatred in your life, and thank God for covering your sins with His righteousness.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
