Thoughts in Worship
Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Tuesday, March 15, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “Bible Words by Which to Live.” Today’s Word is, “Happy.”
“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” (John 13:17)
The world is full of unhappy people. Many are in hot pursuit of love and happiness. Where can we find happiness? Is it in net-worth, pedigree, graduate level degrees, or other people? Far too often, people search for happiness while holding others down. In the corporate arena it is often in scratching, scraping, and stepping over others that happiness is sought. Some say, “If I can just impress the CEO and get an early promotion, I will be happy.” Some of these things if kept in perspective may not be all bad, but the problem is that they can never bring the happiness of God’s word.
When Jesus was preparing to take His last, and most difficult steps to Calvary, He taught His disciples and Judas from the lesson book of service in John chapter thirteen. Even though it would have been easier to simply find a solitary place to pray and brace Himself for the impending conflict, He chose to give a living color example of service. He girded Himself with a towel, and began to wash the disciples’ feet. It did not matter to Him that He knew that they would all soon forsake Him. It did not matter that He knew Judas would do Him harm. He decided to give them the perfect example of forgiveness, love, service, self-sacrifice, and humility.
There is a lot to be learned from this example, but let’s focus on one aspect today. Jesus said that they should follow His example of service. If Jesus, the Savior of the world and Creator of the universe can be humble enough to serve, rather than seeking to be served, how should we live? If the Master humbled Himself, then the servants should follow His footsteps.
The answer to true happiness is humility and service. As we put ourselves last and give to others, we closely align ourselves with the Lord. It is in those moments when we are serving with sincere hearts, that we are a conduit through which God is working. If He is flowing freely through us to others, how can we be anything other than fortunate, well off, and blessed. Godly happiness is found in putting ourselves last in order to serve others as Jesus did. “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” (John 13:17).—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
