Thoughts in Worship
Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Friday, March 18, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “Bible Words by Which to Live.” Today’s Word is, “Worship.”
“Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, Give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” (Psalm 29:1–2).
We all worship. It is intrinsic with all human beings. And before you doubt what I am saying here too much, do note that worship means to adore, be devoted to, and show reverence/respect. All of us revere something, or even someone. Some adore our own thoughts and our beautiful faces. Some worship tangible idols that represent false gods. Some show undue devotion to work and our bosses, to the detriment of devotion to God. Some adore partisan politics so much that we have real skirmishes with those whom we claim to love, because they don’t support whom we support. And of course, many millions of people worship the Creator of the universe. It is this latter approach to worship I wish to highlight today.
The psalmist, David, begins our wonderful song of focus, by addressing the “sons (children) of God.” Like a good worship leader, he says that they should give glory to God. Ascribe to Him, and Him alone, omnipotence. There is none like Him. Ascribe to God, and God alone, distinction and honor of which only He is worthy. Then He says that they should worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. It is this last phrase that I would like to further underscore.
In the Beauty of Holiness: This phrase alludes to being covered in holy adornments. This brings to mind the following verse: “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.” (Isaiah 61:10). Only those who are covered in God’s righteousness, which the Bible describes as beautiful adornments, jewels, and finest linens, can worship the Lord. Don't miss this. David said to worship the Lord while covered in His righteous adornments. It’s almost like a good marriage relationship. Only those who are covered in the faithful bond of mutual love, respect, and honor can truly represent their marriage to the world. Likewise, only those who accept the bond of love, which good relationship brings, along with accepting His beautiful character in place of ours, can worship the Lord “in” the beauty of (His) holiness.
It is an honor to worship God. It is a privilege to be called His children. It is a blessing to be covered in His beauty. Give thanks for the opportunity.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
