Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Sabbath, March 26, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “The Whole Armor of God.”
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:” (Ephesians 6:17).
It is often said that the only implement of offense in the armor of God is the Sword of the Spirit. I beg to differ, but perhaps that is another set of devotional thoughts. People often also say that the armor has six implements, which I also dispute. This powerful Sword is, in fact, implement six of a perfect seven. More on this tomorrow.
The Bible says that the Word is living, active and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). It has the power to analyze and accurately judge even the intents of the heart. That’s serious. In a battle you definitely want a weapon that is precision guided that can fully assess the situation. This would give an incalculable advantage to the possessor.
In terms of our context here, we have a living color example of how this weapon can be used effectively to thwart the enemy’s onslaught. In Matthew and Luke chapter four, Jesus is seen in a hot battle with Satan. The Spirit led Him as the devil took his best shots. If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice that Jesus skillfully used the Word to cut through deception. The intents of Satan’s divisive insinuations were exposed fro what they really were. The antidotes the Bible provided for each of Satan’s potential infections with sin bolstered Jesus’ faith. We must not miss the fact that Jesus did not only know what Scripture said on the subject, else those with greater brain capacities would have an advantage over those who are a bit less intelligent. Jesus knew the Word and also lived it. He lived in full submission to His Father’s will. He was led by the Spirit and protected by angels. When the enemy tempted Jesus, His submission to the Father put Him in position to overcome the attack. With the Word of God, rightly applied and faithfully lived, guaranteed the devil’s defeat. God is willing to work in this way in each of our lives if we will follow Jesus’ example. The blessing is that the Lord was victorious in the flesh, and is the living Word of God in the Spirit. Jesus is the living, breathing Word of God (John 1:1-14).
