Based Upon Romans 7
-
We’re friends, right? I need to be honest with you: I am very tempted to expound this chapter much like a seminary professor would, because it’s full of truth, tension, irony, and complex realities. However, I am going to resist the urge to turn this simple devotional into a deep theological study (this time).

One of the things Romans 7 does for us in the grand scheme of things, is prepares us for a level of relief after coming face-to-face with the stark reality of our utter hopelessness. When we take a peek into the beauty and holiness of the Law, which is a micro-transcript of God’s character, we immediately realize that we fall desperately short of the mark. Before we had the new birth experience described in Romans 6, we were sold under sin. We could not even begin to do what God said, because we were slaves to sin, ready to be shipped off to spiritual death row. Anytime we even had an inkling that we should do right, another power overruled and futility was the result. Even as believers, we realize that while we know in whom to place our trust, there is a constant tug on the flesh, enticing us in the wrong direction. As such, we must choose to ever keep our eyes focused upon Christ and accept the fact that without Him we can do nothing. Even our good deeds, taken on their own merits, are but the filthiest of rags.

No matter whether we are still in bondage to sin, or have been liberated from that bondage by faith, we need the power of God unto salvation—a recurring theme. There is never a time, as long as we are living in human flesh on this renegade planet called earth, that we can trust in our own abilities or accomplishments. However, we must not be paranoid about failure once we become followers of Christ. As long as we abide in Him, and He abides in us, we are safe! So, the key to victory over sin is to surrender to Christ and continue to follow wherever He leads.

Today, each and every one of us have the privilege and opportunity to surrender our all to the only One who can deliver us from the crazy maze of sin and death. Let today be the day you decide once and for all, that you will give God your sin, guilt, and shame. Let Him give you a clean heart and renew a right spirit within you.
