To say that the seventh-day Sabbath is an interesting convention would be an understatement. At a time when there was no sin in the world, our perfect God, who created perfect people, assigned a perfect time for us to enjoy unencumbered communion with Him. And all of this beauty was associated only with the seventh-day, a perfect number.

The blessing of the holy Sabbath day was an enjoyable time for Adam, Eve, and God. Even though all that was around them in Eden and beyond was very good, they needed to experience God in a way where their focus was only Him. They could look deeply into His eyes and see His compassion and care. They could listen intently to every word, they could walk with Him as He showed them the wonders of creation and shared His most cherished desires for their lives. They could sing together, and make blissful memories that would last for eternity. Besides all of this, holiness was built into the day itself. Of all the days of the week in which they could experience growth, promise, and communion with God and others, this time was special, simply because God deemed it so. He covenanted to bring special blessings that could be garnered only on that day.

If a holy, sinless people needed the Sabbath, what about us? With all of the stresses and cares of this life, along with the times we have fallen short of God’s ideal for our lives, the Sabbath is especially valuable to us. Now, we can experience the burden-lifting elements of this time with God. We give God our burdens, and He will give us His rest. Aren’t you glad that the Sabbath has been preserved, even through the sin fiasco? Aren’t you glad that God was so wise and thoughtful, that He preserved a time when the pressure of bills, overwork, daily chores, and every other mundane reality would be compelled to be kept at bay if we choose to enter into this rest by faith? I certainly am. If you have not experienced this rest, you should try it. Your life will never be the same.--L. David Harris (www.davidwritesalot.com)
