“And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.”

Revealed in the furniture of the ancient Jewish tabernacle was a precious truth. This truth would change the face of the world if fully realized. If world leaders understood it and those who lived in each country lived by it, all wars would cease. No crime would be able to thrive in any of our neighborhoods. Love would abound and strife would always give way to peace and safety.

The Lord instructed Moses to make a single golden candlestick with seven lamps. The candlestick would have three lamps on each side and one in the center. This candlestick would be beautiful and give light to all that was in its presence. This was a simple article of furniture, but the truth surrounding it is astounding.

Candles give light--that’s obvious. Did you know that the Bible reveals that the word of God is light? “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalms 119:105). The Bible also says that Jesus Himself, called the Word of God in John chapter one, is the ultimate light. “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” (Revelation 21:23). “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12). Notice too, that the lamp was in the holy place of the Jewish tabernacle. This holy place was a symbol of the house of God and more importantly, the hearts of God’s people. When Jesus, as revealed in the word of God is present in the church and His people, many incredible things begin to happen. His people are converted fully to God. Because of this miraculous conversion, we also teach others of the light that they too might live in harmony with God. “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16).

The blessing that we must find in the golden candlestick is that God has given us the light of Jesus Christ as revealed in His word. As we receive that light ourselves, we allow it to emanate from us in order to lead others into right relationship to God. It is a blessing to partake in heavenly light. It changes our lives for the better.–L. David Harris (www.davidwritesalot.com)
