The high value our God has placed upon women is seldom understood, in our day especially. The first man, Adam, realized very quickly, that he was without an “other self” before Eve was created. Every other species of animal had a helper who would complete him. Being in the express image of God, Adam recognized that to complete the portrait God was painting of Himself on earth, the sterner attributes of God’s character in Adam needed to be complimented by the more nurturing character of God. Thus, Eve was created.

Although Eve placed herself, and every other woman in history in a difficult predicament by venturing onto enchanted ground in the serpent’s presence at the tree in the midst of the Garden, against God’s counsel, our God has shown His supreme regard for women throughout the ages as He prepares both men and women for eternity with Him. In fact, God even calls His beloved people a beautiful, unblemished bride as we rest our faith in Him. He personifies love as a woman, for love seeketh not her own according to 1 Corinthians 13:15. God is love (1 John 4:8). In contrast to the froward, evil woman, God personifies wisdom as a woman whom we should seek as for hidden treasure according to Proverbs 2. Jesus is our wisdom (Proverbs 8; 1 Corinthians 1:30). Jesus said that as a hen gathereth her chicks, so did He gather His recalcitrant people unto Himself in Matthew 23:37. Do not miss this point here: I am in no way suggesting that God is a woman. That would be unbiblical! I am simply saying that we would do well to respect the position and honor our Father has placed upon the women He created to help complete men, and to personify the nurturing character of God in the human family.

The coming week’s devotional thoughts will focus on some of the various ways women participated in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Let’s prayerfully glean as much as possible, and ask the Lord how we should apply what we learn to our daily experience.--L. David Harris (www.davidwritesalot.com)
