Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Monday, June 6, 2016 (Repeat of Sabbath, May 9, 2015)
Based Upon 2 Corinthians 5:5
In 1944, under President Roosevelt, the United States of America signed a bill into law that showed veterans of the United States armed forces appreciation for endangering themselves for the security and freedom of their country. What was commonly called the GI Bill, afforded them the opportunity to receive substantial financial benefits to be used towards an undergraduate and graduate-level college education. Eventually, the Home Loan Guarantee Program was also enacted. This gave veterans the privilege of owning their first home with no down payment.
For many years, I served our veterans and active-duty service members as a university Veterans Certifying Official. As I considered these benefits in light of this week’s focus my mind was directed to the ministry of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given to us freely in order to educate us in the truth concerning ourselves, as well as the truth concerning God. He is holy and we need to be made holy by His grace. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13). This benefit is given because of Jesus’ perfect service to God in giving His life on behalf of sinners. Along with this, the Holy Spirit is given as an earnest. “Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 5:5). The Greek term for earnest used in this verse, is derived from a Hebrew word meaning, pledge or security; money given in advance to procure property. Paul was giving encouragement to those who love the Lord and will soon lay aside these earthy homes, our bodies, in exchange for our heavenly bodies. The way that we receive this promise is through the Holy Spirit. He is our security deposit--our earnest.
As you can see, the United States government found a wonderful way to reward faithful veterans by giving them better access to education and home ownership. The Lord has given us, through the Holy Spirit, access to godly understanding and the promise of eternal life. One man said, he didn’t know where he would be were it not for the GI Bill. I say that I do not know where I would be were it not for the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Thank the Lord that He has given us this precious Gift, not based on anything we can do, but on the faithful love and ministry of God through Jesus Christ.--L. David Harris (www.davidwritesalot.com)
