We are focusing on getting to know God from the perspective of John the beloved.
Today’s Scripture Focus: “Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.” (John 1:38–39).
With Jesus, every moment is a teachable moment. Oftentimes, we look for some spectacular event or deep spiritual teaching that thrusts us staggering backward in order to be impressed. If lightening does not flash or the earth does not quake, some are simply bored with spiritual things. This is unfortunate. An example of God’s simplicity is seen in the story of Elijah’s life. The Bible says, “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:11–13). It was in the seemingly unremarkable stillness of God’s whisper, that the words of life were present for the fearful prophet. This is often the case today. The Lord presents us with many opportunities to get close enough to Him that we can feel His vitalizing breath move our eyelashes and warm our faces. It is in this stillness, that He can have our undivided attention.
Does God have your attention? Are you quiet and still enough to hear His voice?—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
