Thoughts in Worship
Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Thursday,
We are focusing on getting to know God from the perspective of John the beloved.
Today’s Scripture Focus: “Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” (John 1:45).
Pause! Did you get that? Do you see how quickly news traveled, even before there were telegraphs, telephones, televisions, Internet, and social media? I love how God orchestrates meaningful encounters in our lives and then puts it in our spirits to share those encounters with others. There is certainly more than enough bad news to go around. It is a blessing to see when news of great things travels like wildfire.
I’d like to draw your attention to a couple of easy to miss points: Firstly, the Bible says that Philip went to look for Nathanael to tell him about Jesus. It does not say that he happened to bump into Nathanael and mention in passing that they saw Messiah. Do you get the difference here? Philip was intentional and excited about sharing Jesus with Nathanael. He made a special effort to get the news to him. How intentional are you about getting the Word out about Jesus?
Secondly, Philip said that they found Him of whom the prophets wrote. This means that they had an expectation of seeing Messiah one day based on prophecy. They weren’t just lying around and mysteriously happened upon Jesus. God ordered their steps and arranged an encounter with the Man they’d recognize in the Spirit because they were expecting Him. Are you in search of God? Do you seek His face so much that when He reveals Himself you recognize His movements in your life?
If you only learn one thing from our theme text today, let it be that we must live our spiritual lives on purpose, and leave nothing up to chance. God is pleased when we diligently seek Him in all we do so He can direct our paths. He is happy when we are quick to share Him with others.
Good news needs to travel fast inasmuch much as it is up to us to spread it. Why not spread news of God’s goodness today?—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
