We are focusing on getting to know God from the perspective of John the beloved.
Today’s Scripture Focus: “And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.” (John 1:46).
Never let your progeny determine your destiny, unless…
People often say things like, “He comes from good stock,” or “I knew her parents. She must be a great person.” Or you may have heard someone say, “I don’t know if I want you around him. He grew up on the other side of the tracks.” “His father was a drunk, so you might want to watch him.” Whether fortunately or unfortunately, and depending upon the details of the following factors, we are all generally products of our parentage, how we were socialized, and the environment from which we’ve come.
When Nathanael heard that Jesus was from Nazareth, he could not believe someone foretold to be so great could have come from a place like that. Nathanael was most likely from Cana, which was not far from Nazareth. He, no doubt had experiences with people from that area. Maybe he had run ins with unruly youth. Perhaps he experienced the unwelcomed entreaties of women of the night. Maybe he experienced the roughness of brash men from Nazareth. Whatever the case, Nazareth did not did not create endearing thoughts in his mind, and Providence saw fit for Him come from among those who lived there. Jesus did not come in dazzling clothing, driving a golden chariot. No, no. He rose up from among the lame, maimed, and brokenhearted. He was well acquainted with the feelings of our infirmities, so He could succour even the least privileged among us.
While it is true that our upbringing, environment, and bloodline have much of an impact on our outcomes, it is not necessarily the case. This is why we have juvenile delinquents who were brought up in stable, well-disciplined homes. This is why we have inventors, thought leaders, and very successful people from some of the poorest, most dangerous ghettos in the world.
Moreover, when someone has chosen God as his or her Father, He overrules all that. When we are reborn, we spiritually assume the DNA of heaven. Our spiritual origin becomes the King of the universe. Our heavenly progeny destines us for holy greatness. We become products of our godly environment, and just like Jesus, we will grow in stature, and in favor with God and our fellow human beings.
“Can any good thing come from God?” should become the question people ask when referring to us, and the answer will become obvious… Yes!—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
