We are focusing on getting to know God from the perspective of John the beloved.
Today’s Scripture Focus: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36).
Every morning the good Lord gives is an opportunity for me to ask myself if I am a believer or not. It seems simple enough, right? I mean, if I recite John 3:16, say, “Amen,” agree with every word, and know that Jesus is the savior of the world, I should be able to tick the belief box on my going to heaven questionnaire. While the question of faith or not is simple enough, examining one’s own heart condition takes a bit more doing.
In our theme verse, believing has more to do with a persistent connection with God than a mental assent to the truth of Jesus’ identity. Better said, to believe on the Son of God is to live in agreement with Him. If He loves me, I love Him back. If He opens my eyes to see where I have made mistakes, I am willing to accept His strength to correct them. If He shows me ways I should have better relations with others, I become His mouthpiece to speak life and peace in place of bitterness, gossip, and wrath. If He gives me a new life assignment, whether at work, play, or in some distant land, I am willing to follow His leading. This is eternal life! Allowing God to govern and guide your every thought and action, in every situation is to believe unto salvation.
The problem many of us have is that we agree intellectually until God asks us to do something we don’t like. I get that. I have been there. There have been many times God has been kind enough to show me His will for my life, and I wished there were other routes, and perhaps there were, but those options were disruptive to my relationship with Him. Every time I have finally just cooperated with God, even when the path He marked out for me was difficult, I was enriched by the process and much better off in the end.
So, today’s lesson is simple: If you like the idea of living forever with no sickness, crying, or pain, cooperate with God, ask Him to teach you to agree with Him, and accept the path He has marked out for your life. It does not get any more complicated than that. —L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
