Question: How Fresh is YOUR Worship?

Thoughts in Worship

We are focusing on getting to know God from the perspective of John the beloved.

Today’s Scripture Focus: “Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.” (John 12:3).

How fresh is your worship? It seems like a strange question, doesn’t it? Freshness. Worship. What do these have in common, if anything?

Think about your life. I know that’s a tall order unless you are only a day old. So many things have transpired over the course of your life. You, no doubt have experienced many levels of trials. Every time you thought you might catch a break, something else happened. Or perhaps you did have a period when things were looking up! Then, it happened. Did you get hit from way out of left field? Where did that insult, problem, trial, temptation, evil-minded colleague even come from? Do you get my drift? How fresh is your worship?

Think about the great things you’ve experienced in life. Did you finally find the love of your life? Was the baby born healthy? Were you healed from a terminal disease? Did God comfort you when you lost your best friend to cancer (I know; #cancersucks)? Were you spared in the nick of time when your abuser finally got his/her just deserts? Are you just thankful because God has been good to you in more ways than you can count? How fresh is your worship?

I am doing my level best to learn from Mary in our theme text. Her worship was so fresh that the aroma covered a multitude of sin. Her worship was so fresh that it overpowered the naysayers and neck-waggers that judged her. Her worship was so fresh that all that mattered to her at the moment she burst the seal on that valuable box of spikenard and anointed her dear, sweet Jesus, was that she show Him just how much He meant to her. I cannot express what a model worshipper Mary was. Her worship was as fresh as the One who made her whole, again and again. Her worship was sweetened by the wonder of His complete sacrifice.
