Thousand Greens is the social network for members of private golf clubs seeking camaraderie through golf. Golf Anywhere, Friends Everywhere.
Today, we quickly check-in with Founding Member and certifiable golf travel nut Josh Kemp. Josh is in the middle of a one year marathon to visit 100 courses he has not yet played. While Josh’s journey is certainly the envy of many (even those listening to this podcast), I admire his reasons for doing this trek and how he’s going about building relationships with the folks he’s meeting.

Today, we dive into the world of member guest events. My good friend and soon to be multiple time member guest partner, Nik Divakaruni joins me to discuss the finer points of formats, picking the right partner, strategy, and how to have the best time possible during these events. While it’s still a little early in the season, it’s not a bad time to think about signing up for these events at your club.
Listeners, please stick around after the music to hear about Nik’s work with the First tee of Oakland. I personally spend my time working with the First tee of San Francisco, and we both encourage you to do whatever you can to support your local organization.
We mentioned a couple of clothing companies during our discussion. While there’s no free advertising on the TG pod, we like to give credit where credit is due. Below are links to the clothes we wore during our last member guest event.

Evan’s a software engineer based in San Francisco who recently did the trip of a lifetime including over 76 rounds in under 3 months. Evan tells us a little about himself, what it takes to plan a trip like this one, and why he’ll never forget it. Stick around after the music for a fun last question.
During the show, Evan refers to Tom Doak’s Confidential Guide as a source of courses he used. Check it out here: https://www.doakgolf.com/confidential-guide-to-golf-courses/

Our guest today is John Lutz, better known to (what appears to be most of) the network as Lutzy. Lutzy has played over 2000 courses (or over 35,000 greens) in his career, including all of the US Top 100. He shares his favorites, which will no doubt surprise most listeners here. We also trade our personal rankings of the courses at Bandon Dunes and hear about why Lutz loves the network.
Listeners, this is the last episode of this season. If you’re tuning in for the first time, please enjoy the previous episodes, and if you’ve listened to them all, I sincerely thank you for joining me on this journey. I plan to branch out next season with a greater variety of topics and guests. If you have ideas for episodes, I’d love to hear them.

Our guest today is Mahesh Vaidyanathan, better known to the network as MV. Like a couple of others I’ve interviewed here, I’ve had a chance to play a few rounds with MV now and can honestly say that he’s part of what keeps people coming back to Thousand Greens. This is one of the longer episodes we’ve done so far, But I assure you it’s worth your time as you’ll find MV’s genuine, heartfelt appreciation for the network and its members oozing from his answers. Stick around at the end for a special easter egg.

Our guest today is Don Callander. Don joins us from Melbourne, Australia where he has been a member at the Metropolitan Golf Club, known to the locals as Metro, for just over 40 years. He shares his thoughts about golf in the sand belt, a few stories about club golf life in Australia and an epic trip to Scotland, and how Thousand Greens became part of his golf journey.
During our interview, Don mentions a few books by Darius Oliver that are part of the Planet Golf series. We highly recommend you check these books out if you’re interested in golf travel and photography. Available on Amazon or wherever you buy your books.

Our guest today is Rick Moe, or for those of you on Twitter, @top100rick. Rick is currently on a mission to play the top 100 best courses in the U.S., but makes it a point of using the list as a guide to see everything in the area. Last year, he played 103 new (to him) courses including some of the hardest places to play. Rick shares his experiences from 2022, advice for getting out to those hard to reach places, and how Thousand Greens has been a meaningful part of his golf journey.
During our conversation, Rick mentions the Confidential Guide to Golf Courses by Tom Doak, et. al, www.top100golfcourses.com, and Golf Club Atlas as resources he recommends to travelers and knowledge seekers. We highly recommend these as well and encourage you to explore them online.
