Jesus paid the MAXIMUM penalty. Jesus suffered for three days and night in the heart of the earth (Matthew 12:40). Hades (the heart or center of the earth) is the destiny of all those without the Lord (Luke 16:19-31). Jesus went to Hades in our place in order to redeem us (Acts 2:27, 31). That is an essential part of the story of our redemption!
