The Mid-Atlantic region is getting a lot of attention for high quality wines. Thanks to the state of Virginia and Maryland leading the way, wine lovers can find great wine-tasting experiences. With 16 years of Mid-Atlantic wine and dining exploring, it’s time to show off my favorites. First, I want to pay homage to Thomas Jefferson, who spent significant time and money trying to grow European wine grapes and produce wine. Although Jefferson failed in grape growing and winemaking, he set the stage for Virginia to become one of the best wine regions in the US. It took me several years living in Maryland to realize there were excellent Mid-Atlantic wineries. One of the first that impressed me was in Barboursville, VA’s tiny but historic village. I was staying at the Inn at Willow Grove. I asked where I could get lunch and wine tasting, and they recommended Barboursville Vineyards. I had lunch at Palladio, their restaurant, and was amazed how good the food and wine were. From the first sip of Zonin Prosecco to the last bite of my entrée, I realized this was as good as any wine lunch I’d had in either Sonoma or Napa.
