Fr Swann Continues Preaching

three symptoms of Satan's influence (Saturday 26th Week Ordinary Time 2020)

Listen Later

Luke 10

The word of Jesus to his disciples in today’s gospel is still good: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!” The Son of God is satisfied and happy with the revelation of his presence to mankind and gives thanks and praise to his Father. Not only his disciples but also all Christians receive this privilege to access directly to the mystery of God and life eternal with resurrection. This is certainly something with which everyone should rejoice and give thanks to God.

But we still ask a question to ourselves – “Am I joyful and thankful?” Many of us cannot always answer ‘yes’ unfortunately. Why? Christ is not enough for us? Why do we still struggle with negativity, depression, bitterness, hatred, and so on? What blinds the eyes that see what Jesus shows?

Anyone who goes through the darkness of the spirit knows that it is not just a human weakness that causes those miseries. Because Satan and his angels constantly work at us. And they use at least three different ways to pull us away from the path to salvation.

First, by aversion. Satan lures with glamours of the world and leads us to addiction. We turn our eyes away from Christ and are fixed on these false gods. All creation is good. However, they can be snares of the devil if they hold our attention away from the Lord.

Second, by despair. Satan incessantly tries to eat away our faith and hope toward mankind, life, and the goodness of the Lord. His goal is to make us give up on ourselves by depleting all hope so that even eternal life may look meaningless and joyless.

Third, by destruction. God creates and builds and keeps. Satan does the opposite – wanting to destroy and annihilate. Satan works on all our faculties of senses, temper, reason, and will to make us destructive. Vicious cycles of hatred and revenge victimize everyone and destroy everything.

Being joyful and grateful is a sign of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in us. On the contrary, becoming negative and hateful is a symptom of Satan’s influence. When we feel this, let us once again look at the Lord. His light will scatter the darkness.
