Through the Church Fathers: April 9

Listen Later

Today we dive into Summa Theologica, Part I, Question 51, Article 1, where Aquinas takes on the question: “Do angels have bodies naturally united to them?” In this thoughtful and precise reflection, Aquinas argues that angels are pure spiritual beings—intellectual substances who do not, by nature, have bodies. Though they appear in bodily form in Scripture, such appearances are for our benefit, not because angels possess bodies of their own. Aquinas draws a careful distinction between the material and immaterial realms and explains why angelic beings operate differently from humans. This article serves as a crucial foundation for understanding how angels exist, move, and interact with the physical world—without being material themselves.
