Through the Church Fathers: August 24

Listen Later

In today’s readings, Origen unfolds a sweeping vision of the end in which all creation is brought into willing subjection to Christ, the final unity mirroring the one beginning. Augustine reflects on the “heaven of heavens” as an intellectual creation beyond the flow of time, and prays for the true Light to speak to his heart and draw him to life in God. Thomas Aquinas clarifies the meaning of “fate,” not as a blind necessity, but as the unfolding of God’s providential order in time, harmonizing divine governance with the reality of free will (Psalm 110:1; 1 Corinthians 15:25–27; Ephesians 4:13; John 17:20–21; 1 Corinthians 7:31; Psalm 102:26).

Readings:

Origen, On First Principles, Book 1, Chapter 6

Augustine, The Confessions, Book 12, Chapters 9–10

Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, Part 1, Question 116
