Through the Church Fathers: July 13

Listen Later

Today’s readings explore one central truth from three powerful perspectives: the soul finds its only rest in God. Augustine reflects on the depths of human memory and longing, describing how even when he surveys all he knows and experiences, none of it can offer true security—only God can. Aquinas picks up this thread by affirming that the image of God is found in every human being, not in substance but in our intellectual capacity, echoing Augustine’s belief that our soul longs upward. Finally, Chrysostom shows us what this looks like in action. In his homily on John the Baptist, he calls us to turn from luxury and prepare for the kingdom of heaven with real repentance. Together, these voices remind us that our inner restlessness points beyond this world, and real transformation begins when we face our sin and lift our eyes toward God.
