Through The Jungle of Doubt - John 20:19-31

Walking Through the Jungle of Doubt: Thomas, Trauma, and the Peace of Christ (John 20:19–31)

Reflecting on John 20:19–31, the speaker connects Thomas’s story to Billy Joel’s “The River of Dreams,” especially the image of walking “through the jungle of doubt.” He argues that doubt is often less intellectual and more emotional, frequently born from trauma, fear, grief, and disappointment. In the post-resurrection account, the disciples are locked away in fear, and Jesus meets them with peace, shows his wounds, and gives the Holy Spirit. Thomas, absent at first, refuses to believe without seeing, likely protecting his wounded heart; a week later, Jesus patiently appears and invites him to believe. Thomas responds with a profound confession—“My Lord and my God”—showing that honest doubt can lead to deeper faith. Jesus blesses those who believe without seeing, promising lasting peace and favor in a relationship with him.
