The ESV (like other modern translations) footnotes "the valley of the shadow of death." The footnote reads “valley of deep darkness," so the line may include death, but it may also include trials and struggles. I want us to consider two things. First, what to remember when we are in dark valleys, and second, what are we to do when we are in dark valleys.
