Deep Dive into Time Is Exceedingly Precious (Ephesians 5:16) by Jonathan Edwards

In Jonathan Edwards' sermon, he argues that time is an exceedingly precious commodity because our eternal happiness or misery depends entirely on how we use it. While managing time well can prevent poverty and bring comfort in this world, its ultimate value lies in the fact that it determines our eternal state. Just as people value gold for its ability to prevent evil or secure good, time is uniquely invaluable because it provides the solitary opportunity to escape infinite, eternal misery and obtain everlasting glory.

Furthermore, time is precious because it is incredibly short and its duration is entirely uncertain. Human life passes swiftly, compared by Edwards to a vanishing vapor or a fast ship, yet the essential work of preparing for eternity requires significant effort and cannot be delayed. Compounding this brevity is the reality that no one knows exactly how much time they have left. Life could unexpectedly end in a matter of years, months, days, or even tonight, which demands that we prize every single moment we are given.

Another crucial aspect of time is that once it passes, it is permanently lost and irrecoverable. Unlike money or material possessions that might be regained after a foolish transaction, spent time can never be bought back at any cost, regardless of how much we might regret wasting it. Because the opportunity for eternal preparation completely vanishes at the moment of death, Edwards urges his audience to seriously examine how they have managed this precious talent granted by God. He challenges readers to reflect on whether their past years, leisure hours, and holy days have been largely empty, urging them to ensure that whatever remaining moments they have are utilized to the absolute utmost for God and the benefit of their own souls.
