Timothy Edwards: Could cancer sniffing dogs soon be a reality?

Listen Later

A Waikato University researcher hopes we’ll soon have dogs sniffing out cancer, thanks to funding from the Health Research Council.
Dr Timothy Edwards has been awarded almost $250,000 to research sniffer dogs’ ability to detect lung cancer from breath and saliva samples.
He told Mike Hosking lung cancer is in need of a cheap and noninvasive screening tool, but evidence suggests the research could be used to detect other types of cancer as well.
The high cost of screening is blamed for the late detection and high mortality rates of lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths in New Zealand.
