Multiple Causes of Tinnitus
"Any sound that’s not elicited by an outside source is referred to as tinnitus. It’s very prevalent, especially for those 65 and older. Seventy-five percent of people with hearing loss have tinnitus," says Dr. Judith A. Curtin, a AAA Board Certified audiologist and a ASHA certified speech pathologist with ABC Hearing (http://abchearing.net/) in suburban Philadelphia. "Over 50 million people have tinnitus, and most other people have experienced it in a fleeting way. Permanent tinnitus is heard all the time. To be established as permanent it really has to last about a year. The causes are multi-factorial."
Dr. Curtin has practiced aural habilitation / rehabilitation audiology for over 30 years. She was awarded her Doctor of Audiology from the University of Florida in December 2006. Dr. Curtin is known as an innovator in her field, being one of the first to implement a comprehensive, integrative audiology program focused on training the older person to ensure maximum benefit from the hearing aids and to develop listening strategies. Her training, research and publications are known locally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Curtin is a faculty member of West Chester University (in West Chester, Pa.) and formerly its Hearing Clinic Coordinator. She guests lectures at other similar institutions. She is a former Chair for Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood for the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
