Tinnitus Research and Relief discussed with Dr. Susan E. Shore

Listen Later

Veterans may suffer from tinnitus because of loud noises, medication impacts, head and neck trauma. Does anyone care?  Yes. In fact, 50 million people in the United States suffer from some degree of tinnitus, commonly referred to as ‘ringing in the ear’. Scientists generally agree that tinnitus is generated in the brain, through ‘maladaptive neuronal plasticity’ in response to damage of the cochlea. Dr. Susan Shore, a professor of neuroscience in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Michigan has spent the last decade studying the mechanisms underlying tinnitus generation.  She discusses with host Jim Fausone the work that has been ongoing and the new technique of earphones and electrodes for 30-minute sessions to cause a bimodal sound-and-electricity treatment that reduced the level of tinnitus about 50% for a period of weeks.  Listen in.
