I’ll live upon His promises,
those tiny shiny diamonds,

because I’ve seen the hard depths 
of the drinking-drowning-darkness 

I’d assured myself the addictiveness,
that I’d ingested - wasn’t contagious 

whenever really it was robbing 
everything: bones and blood...

hopefulness had to have its 
way within my tired old soul
