WORT 89.9FM Madison · Title IX at 50 Years Old
2022 is the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a landmark piece of federal legislation.
Title IX codified gender-neutral admission policies, guaranteed equal academic standards and prohibited sexual harassment at educational institutions.
However, Title IX is under attack once again. In 2020, former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and President Donald Trump adopted Title IX regulations that severely limit students’ ability to sue educational institutions for sexual harassment or discrimination.
Alexandra Brodsky works as a civil rights attorney for Public Justice, and is counsel for a pending lawsuit seeking to overturn the DeVos regulations. She is the author of Sexual Justice, out now from Metropolitan Books and joins to talk about Title IX and its current state.
