Titus 1 Discussion

One line in Titus 1 sounds like it should never be read out loud: “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” Then Paul adds, “This testimony is true.” We don’t dodge that tension. We talk through why Scripture sometimes names a culture’s patterns in stark terms, why that isn’t the same as writing people off, and how honest diagnosis can actually be an act of pastoral care when the goal is repentance and new life.

From there, we zoom in on what Titus is actually doing on Crete: putting what remains into order by appointing elders. Titus 1 gives a surprisingly down-to-earth set of elder qualifications that sound less like hype and more like spiritual health: self-control, honesty, hospitality, discipline, freedom from greedy gain. We unpack why the New Testament treats this kind of character as expected for every Christian and required for church leaders, and why plurality of elders is meant to protect the church rather than build a personality-driven platform.

We also deal with the hard command to confront false teachers. Paul is clear that empty talk and “shameful gain” can wreck families and churches, and that unity can’t be purchased by sacrificing truth. The hope running through it all is anchored in a simple phrase: “God who never lies.” When God’s truth shapes a community, even a broken culture can change.
