Titus 1:5-7 - Elders for Gospel Order: Christlike Character Part I

Listen Later

Charisma can draw a crowd, but it cannot carry a church. We’ve all watched gifted leaders rise fast, speak boldly, and then collapse in ways that leave people wounded and the name of Christ dragged through the mud. That pain forces a hard question: what kind of leadership actually protects a church instead of endangering it?

We turn to Titus 1:5-7 where Paul tells Titus to “set things right” by appointing elders, and we slow down to feel the weight of Paul’s metaphor: the church is God’s household. That single image reshapes everything. A household isn’t a brand, a platform, or a corporation. It’s a spiritual family that needs protection, formation, correction, and care. From there we explore why Paul starts elder qualifications with the leader’s home, what “above reproach” really means, why “husband of one wife” points to loyal character, and why “faithful children” is about order and credibility rather than trying to read a child’s heart.

Then we face the disqualifiers head-on: arrogance, hot temper, self-indulgence, bullying, and greed. These aren’t abstract sins; they create predictable harm. We also lift our eyes to the best news in the text: these qualifications are rooted in Jesus himself, the true Overseer who leads without pride, loves without anger, serves without indulgence, protects without intimidation, and gives without greed. If you care about church leadership, elder qualifications, pastoral integrity, and a gospel-shaped church culture, this conversation will steady you. Subscribe, share with a friend who serves in ministry, and leave a review with one trait you believe every church should prioritize in its leaders.
