"Being a fighter is not easy, really not. It's getting up in the morning, every morning, and making the bed the same way. It is to keep hours and hours in the most remote places in the country. It's sleeping 5 hours a night at best and no sleep at all at worst. To be a warrior is to learn that weapons and black coffee are your best friends.
And what to do if being a fighter is also a waste. Seeing in the story your friends going out to parties every weekend when you are at the outpost waiting for a briefing for a tour is not the most fun thing there is. And don't think I'm angry, I'm really not, I support them from the bottom of my heart... but voila, I feel like it too.
Being a fighter means keeping in touch with family, friends and your partner, even though it's really at the expense of sleeping hours, which you barely have anyway. And after a busy time on the line, you also unsave and see a message on WhatsApp from your friend and find out that she is no longer your friend. To be a warrior is to continue to function normally despite the broken heart and the constant stress you have.
'A foreigner will not understand' we always say... and it is true. A foreigner will not understand the meaning of being a warrior. A foreigner won't understand what it's like to return from a 12-hour tour and find out that the guys have organized a scary fire. It's sitting in a smoking corner with the ward after a hard day and having the laughs of life until you can hardly breathe.
It's finishing a watch on the hottest day of the year when you're all dripping with sweat, walking into a room and finishing a bottle of strawberry banana juice in five seconds... you learn to appreciate those little things. It's seeing your friend, who has already become your brother, broken and devastated and telling him that it will be okay, that everyone is here for him, and knowing that if you are in a similar situation, they are here for you too.
Being a fighter isn't easy, isn't it? But without thinking twice, it's the best thing I chose to do!"
