To fear God is to be undone and safe in his presence.

Yet, in the face of the storm, the disciples are simply undone, there is no peace. There is no resolve that Jesus with them is the power and presence of God. Many of us would not admit it, at least I don’t think we would, but we have a small view of Jesus. We say he’s saved me from my sin but I’ve never seen him stop a storm. We say this because we have a small view of Jesus’ effective will in our world.

We need to stop allegorizing the supernatural away and let the power of Jesus touch down in our world. Our doctrine may say we trust in an all powerful God, but our practice doesn’t. We’ve taken this storm and we’ve made it a fable for the storms of our personal life. We fill our minds with positive self-talk and images of Jesus as a crisis counselor calming the chaos of our day. Rather than the power of the living God in and with us.
