To Love Is to Obey

“The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not covet,’ and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” — Romans 13:9 (NIV)

When we think about God’s commandments, it’s easy to see them as just a list of restrictions: “Don’t do this,” “Don’t touch that,” “Stay away from this.” But God’s purpose isn’t to limit our lives — it’s to guide us into love. Real, active, life-changing love.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul shows us that the last six commandments — about not murdering, stealing, lying, or committing adultery — all come down to one thing: loving your neighbor as yourself.

When you truly love someone, you won’t want to hurt them, lie to them, or take what belongs to them. You won’t harm their relationships, their property, or their reputation. Love isn’t just about avoiding evil — it’s about actively doing good. Love becomes a compass that guides your choices in every situation.

True love is more than avoiding harm; it’s choosing to be a blessing.

Jesus summed it up with what we call the Golden Rule: “Do to others what you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7:12). That means love is not passive — it acts. It looks like checking in on a hurting friend, being honest when it’s hard, respecting boundaries, and treating every person with dignity — even when they disagree with you.

Today’s Challenge:

Make a conscious decision to show love in action today. Whether it’s listening to someone who needs to talk, refusing to gossip, or simply offering a sincere smile to someone who feels invisible — love like you would want to be loved.

Prayer:

Lord, help me live out true love — not just with words, but with real actions. Teach me that to love is to obey Your law. Help me reflect Your kindness, Your justice, and Your goodness wherever I go. Change my heart so that I desire what’s right and good for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
