Giving birth has been getting riskier for women in the U.S. The prevalence of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are some driving forces behind that risk. They can turn dangerous or deadly before, during or after childbirth for mother and baby. New ideas to reverse the trend are taking root in Mississippi: empowering OBGYNs to manage chronic disease and connecting hospitals with nationally recognized standards for handling childbirth emergencies.
