To Share or Not To Share

Listen Later

Many people feel unheard and the rules around communication in our early lives can contribute to this. As children we learn how to express ourselves, what the right boundaries are and when to stick up for ourselves, this is also where our communication styles are developed.

In this episode, Dawn talks about the importance of communication, how this is developed in early life, the impact it has on relationships and how sometimes sharing can be detrimental to a situation.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In relationships, communication plays a vital role. How each partner communicates impacts the health of the relationship.

  • Setting out our expectations, values and beliefs is incredibly important and is often thought about at the start of a relationship. Yet, there are many smaller things that aren’t discussed, such as communication styles.

  • If we don’t think about how the other person likes to communicate or what it is they need from an interaction it can have dire consequences for both parties.

  • Sometimes sharing isn’t productive or helpful to a situation or relationship. An individuals need to communicate and share can mean they say things they don’t mean or they can’t take back. Emotions can sometimes take over. These situations can create misunderstandings and conflicts in relationships.

  • Our feelings are unreliable, they depend on our moods, experiences and our environment. They can change and be impacted so easily and quickly.

  • All communication has an expectation of something in return. This can vary from person to person and from situation to situation. But these expectations matter.

  • Before sharing ask yourself, is it truthful for everyone, is it ‘good’, and is it useful to either you or the other person?

BEST MOMENTS

“Expressing opinions, especially extreme ones, can be a way of pushing people away”

“People are not digital, they’re analogue. We are not one thing or the other, we are a mix”

“She would interpret his lack of communication as lack of caring”

“We always communicate to expect something in return"
