To spear or not to spear, that is the question for this coming sturgeon spearing season. The 2024 sturgeon spearing season will open on Feb. 10 at 7 a.m. and is anticipated to end on Feb. 25 unless any of the sex-specific harvest caps have been reached.
With the lake ice deteriorating, spearers have been advised against vehicular travel on Lake Winnebago including ATVs and UTVs. This makes preparation and protection from the elements difficult or impossible.
Morning Show host Phil Cianciola spoke with Lake Winnebago Team Warden, DNR Lt. Chris Shea, for the DNR outlook and some guidelines to the 2024 spearing ice safety and lake clarity dilemmas.
