Welcome to episode 43 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In the United States more than 10 million adults experience a domestic violence situation annually. My guests this week share their personal stories and I share mine. The three of us come together to share our vulnerability in the hopes that we can help others out there to not feel like they are so alone. It doesn’t matter how much money you make or what you look like to the outside world. What happens behind close doors can leave people feeling isolated and ashamed. There is help and support out there.
This week my guests are Laurie Huryk and Tara Stemkovsky.
Laurie, is a registered nurse and works in the Information Technology department of a local hospital, where she bridges the gap between medical professionals and the computer systems they use. Additionally, Laurie was elected to the Township Council of Toms River in 2017 for a four-year term. Laurie’s first husband was physically and emotionally abusive. While her first marriage was short, the experiences and lessons derived from that time have helped to shape her life moving forward.
Tara, is the founder and CEO of Arise Aurora. She is also the creator and producer of "Speak-Up Girls", an upcoming podcast series that will highlight true anonymous stories written by abuse survivors. Tara is an abuse survivor herself. She often publicly shares her personal story with abuse in order to educate others. She is also now working with Break the silence against domestic violence.
If you or someone you know is unsafe or unsure if you are living in a domestic violence situation know there is help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is safe and confidential. Reach out to them at 800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. You can visit their website at thehotline.org. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence website it ncadv.org.
Listen in to hear the lessons learned from both Laurie and Tara's difficult, but life-changing experiences, when they share their answers to the question, 'if I knew then, what I know now'. They are now both in healthy relationships that are thriving.
On the next episode my guests are Chaya Pamula, Co-Founder, President & CEO of PAMTEN; Founder of SHETEK & SOFKIN. She is joined by Elaine Tanimura, Executive Project Manager, PAMTEN. To learn more about these incredible organizations visit pamten.com, shetek.net, sofkin.org. Chaya shares how a calling helped to bring her vision to light. She is driven to make a difference in this world through the incredible organizations she has launched. Chaya's mom shared with her the importance of helping others, but also not to totally rely on others. Elaine talks about believing in ourselves and the importance in having mentors along the way. Her message is "just go for it". So much inspiration is shared in this episode!
