This week kicks off our latest theme month, Metroid Month! Throughout the entire month of March, look forward to Metroid-themed topics, culminating in the final episode of the month being about That One Game: Metroid Prime!

For our first episode of the month we’re taking a look back at the man that some would say is the father of Metroid, the legendary creator Gunpei Yokoi. Though he tragically passed away in 1997, his contributions to Nintendo and video games in general are as important as they are numerous. In addition to acting as producer for the first two Metroid games, Gunpei Yokoi is also responsible for the adoption of the cross-shaped D-Pad that is now a staple of video game controllers, and also the invention of the Game Boy itself.
