As a huge winter storm once bore down on the midwestern United States, the media continually broadcast urgent warnings to be prepared for the worst. Snow, freezing rain, sleet, ice, and high winds were predicted. When such warnings are made, it seems certain that every supermarket, neighborhood grocery, and convenience store will be quickly sold out of bread and milk. In my childhood days, an elderly man named Mr. Gill lived across the road from my home. Daily, he sat on the porch of his house with a cane in his hand. From his location on the corner of a busy residential intersection, he watched people come and go up and down the road. Yet what he enjoyed the most was watching my brother and me as we were doing all kinds of chores. We were usually busy cutting the grass, trimming the hedge, raking leaves, washing cars, or painting the house. For millennia, fibers of the flax plant have been spun into thread and used to make linen cloth. Fine linen has been a very useful fabric since ancient times. Today, linen is used to make clothing, bedding, tablecloths, napkins, dish towels, and many other things. It is a durable, lightweight, breathable, absorbent, comfortable, and hypoallergenic fabric. Something very interesting was once related to me by an avid and successful collector of Native American relics. Becoming dissatisfied with our circumstances starts early in many people. Even children, rather than being thankful, will sometimes grouse about the things provided for them. There is a story of a little boy from a time when children in small rural schools would bring their lunch from home in lunch boxes, lunch bags, or a pail that might have originally been a syrup bucket. This youngster was not happy with what his mother sent for his school lunch.
