Too Slow To Disco FM

Did you know that it rains less than 5 days a year in Dubai. We didn’t. To be honest we couldn’t care less about it, until German musician Peter Fox recently released his beautiful, new Love-song "Kein Regen In Dubai", which captures the much-loved, warm "happy-sad" feeling of Too Slow To Disco perfectly. It is sung in German and how smooth and soulful it is… Who would have thought we Germans can do this? Mister Fox is part of the collective SEEED. What else? A lot of TSTD's favourite modern artists surprised us with new tracks / albums recently that make our butts and hearts shake slowly. Pale Jay, Leisure, Yuksek, Jungle, Sirens of Lesbos and Young Gun Silver Fox have been in our shows many, many times, and they will be in it for much longer, because this is the vibe that helps us here survive shitty times. Yes, we finally made it to the "natural Too Slow To Disco habitat": spring-summer-any-day-with-sunshine… As some of you might already be attending a beach somewhere, for this month's show we collected the best new slow-sunset-disco vibes from France, Canada, USA, UK, Australia and Scotland to get you into the perfect sunset mood, wherever you are. With our new show we want to take you on a warm ride to the summer coasts of southern France! These are all new tracks by modern soft disco French artists, some of them quite successful (in France), but some even unknown for most Frenchies. What unites them is a modern approach to the sunny sound of the balearic French 80s, when tracks by Chagrin D’Amour, Caroline Loeb a.m.m. became big hits all over Europe. The sound back then and today breathes a longing for romantic beach sunsets, falling in (and out) of love, a holiday. Tough times. No new show without the loss of another of my musical heroes! This time we say R.I.P. to the one and only Bobby Caldwell. Not the most famous by name but - oh boy - he wrote one of my / everybody’s most important West Coast Yacht / AOR / Blue Eyed Soul anthems ever: "What You Won’t Do For Love". A song so smooth, soulful and mellow, it is nearly impossible not to dance (slowly), fall in love, make love and feel the sunshine of a Californian coastline to it! It actually is one of the tracks that made me think about starting TOO SLOW TO DISCO. Almost every time I play it someone is coming and says "Thanks" because of a special story they have with it. On the other hand: youngsters come to me asking me about the track, because they know one of the many Hip Hop / R&B tracks (a.o. by 2Pac) that sample it. Millions of stories connected to music like this. Thanks a million, Bobby! Caldwell’s other work can be found in the music of Notorious B.I.G., Kool G Rap, Master P, Aaliyah, Nas X, Chance The Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, Little Brother, The Game, Madlib, Robert Glasper. I included Common’s "The Light" at the end in a special version with B.C.’s original track "Open Your Eyes" as an intro. So the second half of this month's show is all for Bobby! In the first half you get the best of the best of new smooth tracks from this month, by some of our favourite artists like YGSF, Benny Sings, but also new projects like JIM (of Crazy Penis), who will release a very special modern West Coast album soon, Pearl & The Oysters and a wicked cover version of The Beloved’s "Sweet Harmony" by Sirens Of Lesbos. I am sure that Bobby would have approved of all of these tracks because of the musicianship and smoothness surrounding these artists. So much work went into this mix, I almost missed the deadline… but, hey, it is to to say goodby to the real G.O.A.T., the one and only Burt Bacharach, our god of pop music! Here is my tribute to maybe the most important musician in my life. I tried to not only include my favourite Bacharach tracks (too many anyway..) but amazing, unusual covers of his music, most of them with a lot of Soul (and a Morrissey cover…). Also in here, lots of musicians (old and newer) talk about him, you will find interview bits of Burt himself, Hal David, Noel Gallagher, Richard Carpenter, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, etc. Like Noel mentions in this mix, even if you have never heard of Burt (fool….), you definitely not only know a lot of his songs/compositions, but for some strange reason you can also sing along to them, because they are/were everywhere. They are part of the backbone of modern pop music all over the world. I am pretty sure that if there are aliens watching/listening to us, they not only love his music, but they probably will come one day to take him home with them in their ship (a balloon, as we all know now…). Unfortunately, it's too late for that now… ! His songs float by all of us when we are young, often in the background on our mum's kitchen radio, but as soon as we become older, experience the big feelings of love, heartbreak, loss, sadness, melancholy… those little songs suddenly make so much sense. They are (and will be) the best remedy against all low times! And I can’t thank Burt Bacharach enough for making my shit times bearable. Your legacy will NEVER EVER stop to be discovered, loved by every coming generation in the future. R.I.P. Burt, and thanks a million for your music! Trust me, we will cherish the beautiful heritage you gave to all of us… P.S: One more really special musician left us recently, the one and only Terry Hall (Specials, Funboy 3 and so much more.), he would have deserved his own tribute show too, so of course his version of "This Guy's In Love With You" is in here!

Finally, the summer break is finished and we can get back to our monthly TSTD FM radio show, full of smooth, soulful music, you can almost dance to. Choosing the tracks wasn’t easy, there were too many…. but I just went with a selection of the mellow sounds that helped me through this weird summer. Some old favourites like Poolside, Kraak & Smaak, Young Gun Silver Fox, alongside a chance to discover some exotic vibes from all over the world. Of course there is a TSTD premiere in there, the Turbotito rework of "Fall In Love In Outer Space" by The Prime Time Band. It is part of a rework package coming to you later this year. Check out the original version on our new compilation Too Slow To Disco 4, which finally was released last week. The show is also kinda dedicated to Weird Al Yankovic…. God knows why….!
