The top two patio and deck ideas on Houzz this year include snack bars. The top design from Austin, Texas-based Younger Homes has a pass-through window that connects the kitchen to the deck. The second-most-popular Orange County, California-based Patterson Custom Homes’ design has a corner snack bar with sliding windows.

Another survey is showing the popularity of outdoor rooms. Covered outdoor rooms/open-air rooms (73 percent), patios (68 percent), and decks (55 percent) ranking more popular than open space (28 percent), according to “The Future of Home Design” survey by the New Home Trends Institute (NHTI) and Pro Builder. 

Front porches are also rising in popularity, according to that survey and the National Association of Home Builders’ “What Home Buyers Really Want” report.
