Written by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, and Phil Spector, the song was originally recorded by Darlene Love and released November 22, 1963 (the day of the JFK assassination). Upon release, the song did not find commercial success but in later years, it has gone on to become a Christmas standard. For years, Love performed the song annually on the Late Show with David Letterman.
