Publisher's Summary:
Topgun on Wall Street chronicles one mans extraordinary journey from the cornfields of Ohio, to the cockpit of an F-14, to the boardrooms on Wall Street. Lieutenant Commander Jeffery Lay and number-one New York Times best-selling author Patrick Robinson bring a provocative, ground-breaking voice to the business landscape with a revolutionary answer for stabilizing corporate America: business - the military way.
As a Topgun fighter pilot, Lieutenant Commander Lay perfected a tried-and-true military technique: PLAN - BRIEF - EXECUTE - DEBRIEF. However, when he retired from active duty in 2006 and went to work for a subsidiary of the ill-fated Lehman Brothers, he noticed that everything about the business world was different: less efficient, awash with excuses for failure, allowance of men with tricky morals to rise to the top, self-gain overshadowing teamwork, and a devastating lack of accountability.
With such deeply rooted flaws, is corporate America doomed for perpetual failure? Answer: Not if we put admirals in charge and adopt the militarys tight chain of command. This game-changing thesis is interwoven with Lieutenant Commander Lays dramatic story, including his high-intensity strike fighter aircraft landings, never-before-heard details of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), and his heart-breaking, humbling, and inspirational battle with cancer at the peak of his military career. Topgun on Wall Street is written by a leader determined to show the business world that excellence is a choice and perfection is attainable.
Members Reviews:
Great aviation elements
I was not at all sure what to expect from this book, but some of the reviews made me curious enough to buy. Good decision. It was very thought provoking and gave fascinating insights into flying strike fighters off a carrier. I can't say I disagree with Mr. Lay's views on the financial crisis but that's not my reason for writing these comments; I have about as much chance of investing as I do in piloting a space ship to Jupiter. However, I love flying and - to my delight - the aviation elements were considerable. There was much more about the author's experiences throughout his flying career than I'd anticipated from the title alone and it totally made the book for me. Don't let the cover blurb mislead you because this is most definitely not a dry tome on financial wheeler-dealing. If you're interested in the story of a man's rise from country kid in Ohio to Annapolis plebe to F-14 Top Gun graduate, I definitely recommend this book.
One of the greatest books I have ever read
One of the greatest books I have ever read. The sacrifices and self discipline these men endure to fly the F14 Tomcat strike fighters, and to go on and become Top Gun pilots, takes a bit of getting one's head around. This is a book written as only Patrick Robinson could write it. A book you just can't put down once you start it. Why doesn't the education department teach our young people in high school, there is more to life than bullying, drugs and making an arse of ones self on the streets at night. Thank God there are people like Commander Lay still in the world, to keep us safe and secure. Thank God there are people like Patrick Robinson still in the world, who can write with such brilliance that you never want to reach the last page of one of his books.
