Covenants used to mean something. In a graphic ritual of old, animals would be torn in two and individuals would pass between the remains symbolizing what would happen to them if they broke covenant. Jesus captures this imagery beautfully in The Last Supper and we celebrate it's deeper meaning in Communion.
