This episode showcases the dynamic personality of Joey Gamper Cuthbert from Tonbridge, England. She is the Chair of SportCheer England (UK National Governing Body) and Owner of Squad Safe. Among her roles, she is also a Learning and Participation Consultant in the areas of dance and sport, a frequent presenter and public speaking figure, fully qualified UK Coach and former gym owner.
I invited Joey to chat today because I believe she is an underutilized resource in the cheer, gymnastics and dance world. Her “bigger than you” purpose is the safety and security of not only the 89,000 cheer athletes across the UK but globally. Not only does she conduct courses for gyms teaching them to properly safeguard athletes but she believes in this purpose so passionately that she threw her name in the hat to serve as Chair of the first ever cheer NGB in the UK. And - oh yeah - together with her board, she createdthe whole thing from the ground up.
Joey’s story is colorful, motivating and entertaining. We touch on so many topics relevant to players in the gym industry. If you’ve ever wondered about child protection in your gym, how to create a more inclusive environment, or kicking that negative self-talk and doubt to the curb – this is for you. There are a few plot twists and turns intertwined in her story, so make sure you listen until the end.
In this episode, we talk about:
· The power of being vulnerable and asking for help.
· Being a more ethical and moral gym owner, regardless of laws and requirements.
· The key to overcoming Imposter Syndrome.
· Identifying our privilege and platform as female leaders.
· Ways that we can move forward and have a more positive impact as gym owners, regardless of sport.
So, if you needed a pick-me-up and a little kick in the pants to get going on that project you’ve been putting off, listen to this first. Because if not you, then, who?
