Southampton’s Championship campaign gets off to the worst possible start as Saints suffer a self-inflicted 2-1 defeat away at Watford. Martin Starke is joined by Steve Grant, Glen de la Cour and Daily Echo Southampton reporter Dan Hargraves to pick through a frustrating afternoon at Vicarage Road. The panel discuss the mistakes which handed Watford their goals, Jack Stephens’ difficult afternoon, Tonda Eckert’s tactical set-up, Southampton’s continued slow starts and why Fin Azaz’s introduction made such a difference. There’s also a look at the squad following Shea Charles’ departure, with midfield reinforcements now firmly on the agenda, while the panel debate whether Saints also need another centre-back. Attention then turns to the first Championship game of the season at St Mary’s. Stoke City fan Robin Evans joins the podcast to preview Saturday’s meeting, reflect on Stoke’s own opening-day defeat and give his verdict on new Saints striker Divin Mubama following his loan spell with the Potters last season. Plus, there’s the latest transfer discussion after Southampton rejected Benfica’s offer for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, while Aaron Ramsdale’s appearance for the U21s raises further questions about where the goalkeeper will be playing once the transfer window closes. Finally, we make our Southampton vs Stoke predictions and check in on the TSP Prediction League after 161 entries for the opening weekend. TSP is powered by our community of Total Saints on Patreon. Another four goals at St Mary’s and another starring performance from Cyle Larin as Southampton beat Bristol City 4-1. Martin Starke is joined by Steve Grant, Glen de la Cour and Alfie House to look back at a scoreline which perhaps didn’t tell the full story of the afternoon. Bristol City caused Saints plenty of problems, but Southampton were clinical when the opportunities arrived — with Larin scoring twice, Kuryu Matsuki finding the net and Finn Azaz finishing the game with another hugely productive performance. The panel discuss Larin’s remarkable start to the season, Azaz’s influence, Matsuki’s growing case for a regular starting place, Nathan Wood’s performances in defence and the impact of Cameron Bragg and Divin Mubama from the bench. There’s also the chaotic build-up to Southampton’s second goal, Flynn Downes’ injury and the continuing wait for a first clean sheet. Attention then turns to the final game before the extended international break as Saints travel to Wrexham. With Southampton still looking for their first away win of the season, can they take their devastating St Mary’s form on the road and head into the Portsmouth game with serious momentum? The team also discuss the ongoing FA situation surrounding Tonda Eckert, Casper Jander’s potential return, Cyle Larin’s Championship Player of the Month award and the latest from Southampton Women and the Under-21s. Southampton made it three Championship home wins from three with an impressive 3-1 victory over Swansea City at St Mary’s — and arguably their best performance of the season so far. Martin Starke is joined by Daily Echo Saints reporter Alfie House, freelance football writer Tom Prentki and Rob Maddox (SaintRob) to look back at a night when Southampton’s attacking quality really began to click. The panel discuss Finn Azaz’s influence, Leo Scienza’s best performance of the season, another excellent display from Flynn Downes and the increasingly promising midfield partnership between Downes and James Ward-Prowse. There’s also plenty of praise for Nathan Wood and Keven Schlotterbeck, discussion over whether Downes should be Southampton’s regular captain and a look at the nervous moments inside St Mary’s when Saints continued to play out from the back at 2-1. The atmosphere is another major talking point. Has moving the home support into the full Northam End finally created the advantage Saints hoped for — and is the Northam Wall now playing its part in Southampton’s outstanding home form? Attention then turns to another big Championship test as Bristol City visit St Mary’s on Saturday. Michael Skubala’s side arrive in excellent form after three consecutive wins, with former Saint Dom Ballard among a heavily revamped squad. We assess their strengths, the threat from set pieces, Southampton’s likely starting XI and ask whether another victory would confirm a genuinely strong start to the season. Plus, the panel discuss Aaron Ramsdale being named in Southampton’s official EFL squad and make their predictions for Saints against Bristol City. Southampton responded in emphatic fashion at St Mary’s, putting five past early Championship leaders Millwall in an impressive 5-1 victory. Neil Crespin is joined by Steve Grant, Glen de la Cour and Alfie House to break down a much-needed Saints win. After another slow start, the panel discusses what suddenly clicked, the attacking performance that followed and whether this can be the result that really gets Tonda Eckert’s side moving. There’s also plenty to say about two very different debuts. Keven Schlotterbeck made an immediate impression at the heart of the defence, while James Ward-Prowse returned to St Mary’s and quickly reminded supporters what he can offer. How much have the pair strengthened this Southampton side? Attention then turns to what could be a frantic Tuesday. Saints travel to Birmingham looking to carry the momentum from the Millwall win, while the transfer window closes later that evening. The panel assesses the possible departures, where the squad could still be strengthened and whether there might be one final deadline-day arrival. But can Saints back it up at Birmingham and start climbing the Championship table? Become a Total Saint TSP is proudly supported by our Patreon community of more than 600 Saints fans.
