On Episode 383 of the Total Saints Podcast, Martin Starke is joined by Steve Grant, Glen de la Cour and Alfie House to react to another extraordinary week at Southampton Football Club.

The week began with the written reasons from the League Arbitration Panel, including further details around the WhatsApp messages, the pressure placed on junior members of staff and the panel’s view of how the situation unfolded. Saints then released their own statement, followed by video messages from Dragan Solak and Tonda Eckert.

With nobody losing their job and Dragan making it clear that Tonda has his backing, the panel discuss whether Saints have opted for pragmatism and continuity rather than a full reset. Is this now a siege mentality moment? Has the club decided that the best way through the chaos is to stick together, move on and focus everything on promotion?

There is also a wider look at the fan reaction, which has been far from straightforward. Some supporters remain angry about the damage done to the club’s reputation, while others are already turning their attention to next season and the importance of getting back to the Premier League. This week, the panel begins with the story nobody expected to be discussing: Spygate. Middlesbrough accused Southampton of spying on a training session at their Rockliffe Park base, before the EFL confirmed that Saints had been charged with breaches of its regulations. The panel discuss what is currently known, how Saints may respond, whether the club are likely to contest the charge, and what kind of punishment could follow.

Then it’s on to the play-off semi-final itself, as Saints somehow left the Riverside with a 0-0 draw after a brutal first half against Middlesbrough. Boro dominated the opening 45 minutes, registering 17 shots while Saints failed to have one of their own, but Southampton stood firm thanks to some huge defensive moments from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Nathan Wood, James Bree and Daniel Peretz.

The second half brought a much-improved Saints performance, helped by the introduction of Ross Stewart and Shea Charles. The panel discuss why the first half went so badly, whether Flynn Downes’ return helped or hindered the balance, the struggles of Caspar Jander and Finn Azaz, and whether Kim Hellberg’s side may have already played their best football of the tie.

Southampton are officially heading into the play-offs — and with a win behind them.

On Episode 378 of the Total Saints Podcast, Martin Starke is joined by Steve Grant, Glen de la Cour, Alfie House and, briefly, Producer Alex Graham to look back on a huge weekend for the club and the podcast team.

Before the football, the panel reflect on Benali on Tour, after Martin, Alfie and Alex took part in the gruelling 10 Lake District Peaks challenge in aid of Saints Foundation. It proved to be one of the toughest physical challenges any of them had ever faced, but thanks to the generosity of the TSP community, more than £3,000 has been raised so far, with the wider fundraising total heading towards £50,000. There’s also praise for Franny Benali, Iain Dowie, the Saints Foundation team and the many supporters who made the weekend so memorable.

The focus then turns to Saints’ 3-1 win away at Preston North End. With fourth place on the line, Tonda Eckert made a few changes, resting James Bree and Finn Azaz, while Shea Charles and Cameron Archer were used in slightly different roles. The panel discuss the overall performance, goals from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ross Stewart and Kyle Larin, Daniel Peretz’s mistake, Tom Fellows’ lively display, and why Caspar Jander continues to look like one of Saints’ key players heading into the final stretch of the season.

There’s also a discussion around Player of the Week, the atmosphere at Deepdale, the impressive away following, and the strange sight of an inflatable object making its way around the away end.

The automatic promotion dream is over — but the play-offs are officially confirmed.

In Episode 377 of the Total Saints Podcast, Martin is joined by Steve Grant, Glen de la Cour and George Rees-Julian to look back on a dramatic 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at St Mary’s. A result that did little for either side, but gave us plenty to discuss: another draining night, a chaotic second half, Ryan Manning’s free-kick, Cyle Larin’s late goal, Jack Clarke’s impact off the bench and another outstanding save from Anatoliy Trubin/Peretz late on. The panel also debates whether Larin has now become the first-choice striker for the biggest games, whether the midfield balance was right, and how much the recent run of eight games in 24 days has finally started to show.  

With Saints now 18 league games unbeaten but unable to reach the automatic places, attention turns fully to the play-offs. The panel discusses the importance of finishing third or fourth, who Saints might want to avoid, and whether there is much difference between Middlesbrough, Millwall, Wrexham, Hull or Derby as potential opponents.
